Creativity Explored is a studio-based collective in San Francisco that partners with people with developmental disabilities to celebrate and nurture their creative potential. The year 2023 marked a milestone for Creativity Explored—their 40th anniversary—and we were thrilled to partner with them once again, as we have for many years. This enduring collaboration reflects our shared values around creative expression and, above all, being a force for good. For this special occasion, they approached us to design a commemorative logomark and merchandise, celebrating four decades of community, empowerment, and dignity.

LOGO / MERCHANDISING DESIGN


OBJECTIVE

To create a logomark that honored decades of dedication, celebrated the artists and the diversity of their work, and seamlessly integrated with Creativity Explored's existing logo. Additionally, Creativity Explored sought to develop a line of merchandise showcasing the artists' work, which would be available for sale both at the SFMOMA Shop and their studio in San Francisco.

APPROACH

After reviewing the folder of artwork provided for selection, it quickly became clear that selecting just one piece would be an impossible task. We realized that a flexible logo was the best solution. We began by designing the core structure: a simple yet distinctive "40," with the zero as a perfect circle, which would serve as a versatile frame. This design allowed us to create over 30 interchangeable artist logos, which could be combined or adapted throughout the year.
