Fast fashion has been a mainstay of popular culture for decades. But a recent increase in the rate at which we cycle through trends has sparked concern. With the rise of influencer culture, short video sharing platforms and social media marketing, micro-trends are being pushed onto us everyday. This acceleration of trends can be viewed as capitalism’s dream state; moving the fashion cycle as quickly as possible because once a trend is dictated as dead people are ready to move on to the next thing.

BOOK & EXHIBITION DESIGN
OBJECTIVE
To bring awareness on the drastic acceleration of the fashion cycle and the catastrophic effects this phenomenon is causing short and long term. To help modern day Americans understand the psychology and the power social media has in terms of pushing trends and creating unnecessary wants and false ‘needs’. It is also crucial to breakdown the difference between fashion and style. And how continuing to buy new fashion, even from sustainable brands, is fundamentally unsustainable. We need to make less, buy less, and repair much more.
APPROACH
In the form of a manifesto, the project explores the relationship between mass consumerism and micro trends tied to the rise of social media and influencer culture. The exhibition takes place at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. It presents works by contemporary artists who focus on the current state of the fashion industry. Featuring video, music, photography, and installations. The viewer goes through a journey of evaluating their current actions and ending in a statement of principles and bold call to action. The project asks the question, is trying to live ethically impossible under capitalism and social media?
